    Watching football…

You know, sometimes I question my sanity when I’m in Moab, Utah, and I’m skipping out on a sunset to watch a Redskins game. Hmm. I tried going out to shoot and it just felt wrong. Like how it feels to have a friend from out of town visit, and not being able to see them. Oh well. Go ‘Skins!

Here are two more winter themed shots from Canyonlands National Park a few days ago. The first image is from the Green River overlook. The second is of Washer Woman arch and the La Sal Mountains, taken from Mesa Arch.

    Sandstone Fins

    12.20.08 | Permalink | 3 Comments

    Hey everybody,

Here are some photographs from tonight’s sunset. These shots were taken on Poison Spider Mesa or High Speed Mesa. I’m a bit confused, as I have two books that seem to disagree about the name. This location can only be reached via a not so remote, but very rough 4wd track that was pretty difficult due to ice. Since I still feel like I’m too young to die, I parked the truck and walked the last mile or so. I really love these sandstone fins, and I think the viewpoint I hiked to is definitely one of the more impressive views I have yet to see.

    Hey everybody,

I forgot to set my alarm last night, and I missed what was probably a pretty good sunrise. Oh well… It has ben a winter wonderland out here over the last few days, and I’ve been out from sunup to sundown shooting for multiple days. I’m out scouting some off the beaten path locations today, provided that the roads are passable. We’ll see.

Here are two shots I’ve taken over the past few days, high up in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

    Snow is on the way!

Hey everybody. I’m still in Moab, Utah, in case you were wondering. I’m probably going to be here until Christmas or so. I’ve been shooting a bit around the area, and in Arches/Canyonlands National parks for the last few days. I’ve had some really interesting weather, and some great light. It’s supposed to start snowing here in a little bit, which I’m pretty excited about. From what I’ve read, they’re forecasting totals of 1-3″ in town, 4-6″ in the higher elevations at Arches and Canyonlands, and then a few feet up in the nearby La Sal Mountains! I’ll be getting together with local photographer, friend, and cool cop Bret Edge at some point over the next few days to shoot. If you haven’t seen his work, you should click that link. He has fresh perspectives of an area that is icon-laden and extremely over-shot.  The adventure photography is pretty cool too. Geez… I sound like an advertisement.

Here are two shots from last Saturday. The first one is of Balanced Rock in Arches National Park. This is actually the first time I’ve done a B+W, and I’m not so sure how I feel about it. The clouds were spectacular, but the light was pretty drab, so I figured it’d be appropriate.

This second one is in Canyonlands National Park, just a half mile or so north of Grandview Point. I was photographing out on the actual overlook earlier in the afternoon, and noticed a small sliver of clear sky in between storm clouds. Knowing how potentially awesome these conditions can often be, I walked around for a half hour or so, looking for a good place to photograph. I ended up at this spot, thinking that the light would hit the falling rain/snow off in the distance. I was wrong about how it’d turn out, but happily so!

    Rainy Day

    Hey guys,

I wrote this last night and scheduled it to show up now. I’m probably out in the rain photographing some petroglyphs right now. I’m not particularly interested in them, but I think it’s a fun way to spend a rainy day, and it’s nice to have images of them.

Here are two more from Death Valley that I’ve worked up.

    I made it to Moab!

    Hi everybody,

Due to the fact that precipitation is forecasted over each of the next eight days, I’ve chosen to cut my time in Escalante and Capitol Reef short. I figure that the rain, snow, and ice will make many of the dirt backroads of those areas impassable, and well, that’s where a lot of the good stuff is located. Theres a lot of awesome places to shoot like that here in Moab as well, but there are also more paved roads, thanks to the National Parks in the area.

Over the last few days, I’ve made my way across the state, shooting at Bryce Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Devil’s Garden, slots in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Mon., and Cathedral Valley. I only had one day of sunshine when I was in Escalante. I was being ambitious, and had hoped to get to Spooky Gulch, Peek-A-Boo canyon, and Zebra slot all on the same day. I abandoned that plan once I realized I spent 5 hours inside of Spooky. Anyway, here are some shots from Bryce Canyon and Spooky Gulch.

    Snow Goose Landing

Here’s an older one from Bosque a few weeks ago. The wind conditions were almost perfect for photographing the incoming geese. I’m really just posting this because I had it ready, and need to test something with my blog. Ever since WordPress re-did their interface, any photographs that I post are not clickable. Hmmm.

    Dante’s View

    Hey everybody,

Posts from DV are short and sweet because the internet connection down here is painfully slow! Here’s one from Dante’s View three nights ago. It’s quite a view from up there!
