Rough-legged Hawk in flight, Southern Ontario, Canada

    01.26.11 | Permalink | 6 Comments

It was an absolute treat photographing this raptor and many others last winter with my friend Greg Schneider. Rough-legged Hawks are usually quite shy of humans, and we were quite lucky to find this individual along a rural road in Ontario’s Amish country!

    Red-tailed Hawk, Ontario, Canada

The Red-tailed Hawk is North America’s most common and largest Hawk, yet I’ve found it to be the most skittish of them all, and have had great difficulty approaching and photographing them. When I heard there was an especially tame one in Southern Ontario, I made a point to made a weekend trip around it! These are the first three I’ve processed… I easily have a dozen other keepers, including some of a Barred Owl.

    Hey everybody,

Check out this image I made today of a Northern Shrike. I’ve always had quite a hard time with these birds, and was pretty excited when I came across this one, thanks to a few other photographers.

Northern Hawk Owl in flight over snowy field, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

    Hey everybody,

I’m making a serious effort to get some content up on this blog regularly. I’m currently playing catch-up, and still working through most of my images from late winter/spring. Back in February, I went up to Canada and shot with my friend Greg Schneider. One of the many birds we found was this Northern Hawk Owl in Ottawa.

    Blue Jay in snow

Here’s one from this past winter. I was up in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, with my friend Greg Schneider. We came across an area with feeders that had over 100 blue jays, so we did what any bird photographers would do; we brought out the giant bag of peanuts and stayed for a few hours.

Ring-billed Gull #1, Humber Bay Park, Toronto, Ontario

    03.27.09 | Permalink | 1 Comment

    Hey,

Here is a photograph of a Ring-billed Gull. I know it’s not the most beautiful or rare bird, in fact, you may know that they’re quite common. Anyhow, I feel like I have two shots worthy of sharing. Matthew, Greg, and I were hanging around Humber Bay Park East trying to get some flight shots of a Wigeon and a Bufflehead. While we were there I shot a few flight shots of the many Ring-billed Gulls that were flying all over the place. Now that I’m looking at them on the computer, I kind of like ‘em!

More of the Great Gray Owl

    02.23.09 | Permalink | 4 Comments

    Hey everybody,

Here’s another one of the Great Gray Owl I photographed in Ottawa. Once it landed on it’s prey, it would sit there for a few minutes, and would allow us to get pretty close. Before re-positioning myself to shoot the bird taking off back to it’s perch, I would try to capture a few static shots. For this particular shot, I laid down on my stomach for a super-low angle in order to show the falling snow against the darker background.

Anyway… Here’s my quick story. My super-warm leather and fur mad bomber hat was getting in the way a bit while trying to get flight shots of the owl. I casually tossed it a few feet behind me, and the owl instantly swooped down, snatched it, and flew off to the woods. He didn’t come out for the next fifteen or twenty minutes. Who knows what he did with my hat. Anyway, this image should give you an idea for what I saw as I bid farewell to my hat.

Great Gray Owl flying in snow

    02.21.09 | Permalink | 4 Comments

    Hey everybody,

Sorry for the lack of recent updates. We’ve been really busy between the birds and driving. Amherst Island was a bit of a bust, but we’ve had great luck around Ottawa and Algonquin Provincial Park. I have tons to share over the next few days, but here’s a shot of a Great Gray Owl in the snow. I now love shooting birds in flight when it’s snowing. Also, I have an interesting story about this owl which I will share with you all in my next post.
