I’m getting ready for an epic 6-week Colorado and Utah trip, for which I leave in just five days! Here’s a photo taken in April of this year from a short trip I made to Ohio’s Hocking Hills region. I loved the streams and waterfalls there, and Cedar Falls was one of my favorites!

    Hi everybody,

As I work through processing images from my recent trip(s) to photograph fall shorebirds at Conneaut, Ohio, I’ll be posting a few of my favorites from each species together. I’ll start with one of the more common birds that were present, Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Sora out in the open (just like last year!)

    Hey everybody,

Now I’ll begin sharing images I made from two visits to Conneaut. OH, to photograph shorebirds migrating southwards for the fall/winter! Just like last year when I went to Conneaut, I found a group of three Sora(s?) that ventured out into the open quite a bit! It’s always exciting to get a secretive bird such as the Sora to come out into the open. They’re always tucked away in some thick reeds, so photographing them with a clean background such as this is just a blast!

Henslow’s Sparrow, Belmont County, Ohio, USA

    Hey everybody,

Wow! It has been a while since I updated this blog. Sorry for that. I’ll be around a bunch more in the next few months!

I took a brief trip a few weeks ago to go photograph grassland birds out in Ohio, meeting up with Matthew Studebaker, Greg Schneider, and Brian Zwiebel, at different times. Overall, it didn’t go too well, but I had a few good birds, that’s for sure. Here’s a beautiful Henslow’s Sparrow that Brian found singing in Belmont County, Ohio.

Wood Duck Drake in Autumn Reflections

Who doesn’t like Wood Ducks? They are definitely among the most unique looking North American birds, and a personal favorite to photograph. Even if you’re not into birds, they’re just awesome looking ducks.

In the second week of October last year, I traveled to Cleveland, OH to photograph Wood Ducks. There’s a park that’s a few miles east of the city where Wood Ducks are extremely tame, and have even been known to eat corn from people’s hands. Going in peak autumn color makes for some very unique and interesting photo ops. As you can see here, by standing higher then I normally would for photographing waterfowl, I am able to photograph the Wood Duck with the reflections of the autumn trees on the water. Here’s one of a few I’m going to share with you.

    Downy Woodpecker

    Hey everybody

I’m still getting used to being at home. Here’s a beautiful male Downy Woodpecker from Matthew Studebaker‘s awesome backyard setup. I was hoping to get some shots of the Hairy Woodpecker that has been poking around his place, but I didn’t. I’m happy with this as well! I love the pose up on top of the branch.

Road update + American Black Duck Preening

    10.23.08 | Permalink | 1 Comment

Hey everybody. It’s been a while since I last posted on here! I’ve been super busy shooting and scouting out here in the Blue Ridge/Smokies. This is my first visit to this area, and it has been amazing so far. The foliage has been anything but predictable, and I’ve really had to search hard to find the best spots to shoot. I guess you could say that the conditions are making things pretty interesting. As I write this, from Gatlinburg, TN, almost all of the trees in town are still green! However, things are coming along a bit more nicely around the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Asheville and Brevard. It looks like I’ll be getting some rainy days tomorrow and the next day, so I’ll be working hard to get as many of the higher elevation waterfalls as I can!

Anyway, here’s an image from Ohio. I believe this is a Female American Black Duck, but I’m not 100% certain. As some of you know, I enjoy photographing birds, but I don’t know a whole lot about them. My idea is that I should focus on one particular aspect of bird photography, so I’m going to make Waterfowl a significant project of mine for this winter once I get home.

Here’s the last of my shorebird shots for a while. I believe this is a Pectoral Sandpiper, but I am not sure. Feel free to let me know if I’m wrong!
