Location: Hood River, Oregon
Dates: April 19-21, 2017
Tuition: $795 ($95 deposit)
Instructor: Alex Mody
Group Size: Limit of 5
Highlights: Expansive wildflower meadows at sunrise and sunset, over a dozen picturesque waterfalls, countless lush rainforest scenes with fresh foliage, moss-covered rocks, four-foot tall ferns, and hanging moss everywhere. A very high density of extremely photogenic subject matter!
Overview: The Columbia River Gorge holds some of the most beautiful scenery in North America. Join a local photographer and expert guide for an in-depth and intensive photographic exploration of the Gorge's lush landscape! If you'd like to accumulate a heap of awesome wildflower, waterfall, stream, and rainforest images in a short period of time, this is the tour for you.
The main goal of this tour is to ensure that participants come away with the best photographs possible. I will take participants through the entire image-making process, from beginning to end. This includes: what goes into selecting our shooting locations, and why, composition, creative techniques, technical work in the field, and digital post-processing in Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom, and Photoshop. Limiting the group size to 5 ensures that each participant can receive as much individual instruction as they'd like.
Itinerary: This tour does not have a set itinerary. For the duration of the tour, we will be out in the field each day, with our primary focus on creating compelling images. We will break in the middle of each day for lunch, digital post-processing sessions, and a rest (if time/conditions allow.) We will have dinner together each night. About two months before the trip, participants will receive an e-mail with gear lists, our specific meeting time and place, and other relevant information.
On Day 1, we meet at 3PM in Hood River, Oregon (nearest airport: PDX). We will have a brief introductory session, quickly establish a carpool, and head out to photograph waterfalls/wildflowers for the evening.
Day 2: We rise early to photograph wildflower meadows at sunrise, then waterfalls for the first half of the day. We may break for lunch, to have an informal post-processing session, and/or to rest in the middle of the day. In the afternoon, we will head back out to photograph waterfalls, and then visit another wildflower meadow at sunset.
Day 3: We repeat our schedule from the day before, photographing wildflowers at sunrise, waterfalls through the day, and more wildflowers at sunset. Around midday, we will take a break. After our evening shooting session, we will return to Hood River for a closing dinner.
Fitness Level: Most shooting locations will be reached by short hikes (0-3mi, <400ft elev. gain, travel over rocky terrain), and we will visit several of these locations, as well as a few roadside spots each day. So, while we will not be doing anything strenuous, a reasonable degree of fitness will be ideal. We will be up and on our feet for the majority of each day. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me. Every participant must complete and sign a standard liability waiver and medical form before participating in this workshop.
Accommodation: Best Western Plus Hood River Inn will serve as our meeting point and base of operations for the tour. If you would prefer to camp, there are a number of campgrounds and areas for dispersed camping in the gorge. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
